Honoring Our Veterans During the Month of July

Although Memorial Day honors the fallen soldiers who have sacrificed so much, they deserve to be revered and respected every day of the year. Since Independence Day celebrates the birth of America, July is the perfect time for honoring our veterans who have lost their lives to protect the freedom of people around the world. There are many ways that honoring veterans can make a difference in their loved ones’ lives and the lives of service members who are still with us.

Visit Veterans’ Monuments and Graves

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are 143 national cemeteries and 33 soldier’s lots and monument sites in 40 states and Puerto Rico. There are also many state-run cemeteries for veterans. Taking flowers, small flags, ribbons, and other tokens of appreciation to these sacred sites gives a real sense of gravity to all that they gave to serve their country. Honoring our veterans this way also lets their families know just how much they are cherished.

Participate in a Moment of Silence

Honoring our veterans doesn’t have to involve making grand gestures. Whether you do it with loved ones or alone, taking a few quiet moments to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many veterans is a respectful, humble way to honor their service.

Donate or Volunteer with Groups that Serve Vets

While it’s good to reflect on those we have lost, there are many organizations that serve living veterans every day. Regardless of whether you donate your time or money, helping veterans who are struggling can make a real difference in their lives.

Fly the American Flag

Honoring veterans by flying the flag is a simple way to show reverence and support. Make sure to follow the rules of flying Old Glory, which include displaying it only from sunrise to sunset unless it is illuminated at night and making sure it doesn’t drag on the ground when lowered.
